The photo to the left is Calabria, Italy. You can see why I love Italy but the photo below that is of Australia, and you can also see why I love Australia! Italy represents many things for me - food, family, architecture and history and Australia represents beauty, amazing wild life, open spaces and friendly people. They are two amazingly different countries although they are both in my heart. Right now, both are being inundated with refugees, some 14 million or so. This is a terrible situation for many people who have nowhere to go and have relinquished control of their own lives and that of their families. This makes me terribly sad and frustrated, bu the shameful thing is that many people are still against taking people in. It should be remembered that passports are only a recent addition to our society and have only been enforced in the past generally during the war periods, but what does a border mean? What do passports that say 'Italian', 'Kenyan' or 'Australian' really mean? What right does one group of peoples have over a particular piece of land? Aren't we all part of one world? Will we one day be travelling through space and have EARTH passports? Please think about what is right and not what has just been accepted as the 'law'. |
